9 boys fail age test, barred from U-16 cricket tourney

In a major embarrassment to the city, nine players of the Hyderabad U-16 cricket team including its captain and vice-captain have been found overage and barred from playing the BCCI’s South Zone interstate tournament for the Vijay Merchant Trophy beginning in Visakhapatnam on Friday. Eight are junior college students.

The boys were subjected to the virtually foolproof TW3 (Tanner-Whitehouse 3) bone age maturity process test — done by a single digitally-taken X-ray on the lower end of the forearm of teenagers to determine their exact age — as part of the BCCI’s Age Verification Programme (AVP) adopted this year.
