E-retail gets 100% FDI but with riders

The government on Tuesday allowed foreign investors to pick up 100 percent stake in local e-commerce firms that only provide a platform to other sellers, but put some restrictions on their business models regarding who can sell on this platform. The curbs imposed while opening up the sector have come in for praise from organised retailers, which have been fighting legal battles against online retail format.

Rules were silent till now on foreign direct investment (FDI) in e-retail companies that run on marketplace model, under which owners of the digital platform only facilitate sales and not sell their own products. Rules, however, expressly prohibited foreign investment in companies that were selling their own products online. This restriction remains and is in line with the FDI rules for multi-brand retail.

ONGC to invest $5b in KG basin block

State-run ONGC on Monday said that it would invest Rs 34,012 crore or over $5 billion in the next four years for drilling oil and gas wells in the deep-water block off the country’s eastern coast.

The offshore block, located in the Krishna-Godavari basin, abuts the KG D6 block operated by Reliance. ONGC has alleged that Reliance has drawn gas from its hitherto undeveloped fields that lie next to the already operational oil and gas wells of the private sector explorer.

The dispute is being looked into by a panel headed by Justice AP Shah, chairman of the law commission and former chief justice of the Delhi High Court. The panel is expected to submit its report by May.

`Bahubali' best national film

For the first time ever, a Telugu movie won the best feature film National award. `Bahubali the beginning' bagged the honour sending a wave of ecstasy across the two Telugu states. Since the inception of National Film awards 63 years ago, no Telugu film got the best feature film honour. This was because the jury did not find any film good enough to be given such an award.

Incidentally , the Telugu film industry is the most prolific in the country the number of Telugu films produced each year outstrips the number of Hindi movies. In fact Tamil films occupy the second slot. The national awards were instituted in 1954 so it took 63 years for a Telugu movie to get the award for the best film.

Main Hoon Don- Kohli Helps India Book Semifinal Spot

A pitch slower than it had seemed, a target smaller than what could have been, a chase that became tougher than it was perceived to be, and a man who believes he can win everything. Of several highlights of Sunday’s India-Australia match, the last one was easily the most telling, for it summarised the story of this shootout for the last four slot.

Virat Kohli was addressing the media a day before this match, when he mentioned that more than looking at things as a challenge, he concentrates on winning. The world of cricket has had enough glimpses of that. The PCA Stadium in Mohali saw the latest — arguably his best in this format — which made the difference between also rans and the ones still running.

Govt banks on unlisted PSUs to mop up Rs 5,000 crore this week

The government is targeting to raise around Rs 5,000 crore over the next four days as unlisted public sector companies with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Ireda agreeing to buy back the Centre's shares by dipping into the surplus cash at their disposal. The last-week rush is meant to help the government meet its revised disinvestment target of Rs 25,300 crore.

With two stake sales -Concor and Engineers India Ltd -during the current quarter, the government has garnered Rs 19,500 crore so far this fiscal. “There are no more public issues this year,“ said a finance ministry official.

The government had budgeted for record disinvestment of Rs 69,500 crore during the current financial year but had to lower its ambitious target in the wake of poor market conditions and its inability to push through strategic sale. But even that target is looking tough, prompting the government to rush ahead with other options to raise resources, including buyback and special dividend. As a result, last week, HAL board cleared the buyback plan, while Ireda has been asked to opt for the same route or pay special dividend.“Since buyback of shares in listed entities will take longer the government is looking at unlisted companies to help it meet the target this year,“ said an official. Listed companies with surplus cash and few capital expenditure plans lined up, will follow during the next financial year.

Mayhem in Brussels: 35 killed as multiple blasts hit airport, metro

A series of explosions claimed by the Islamic State group ripped through Brussels airport and a metro train Tuesday, killing at least 35 people in the latest attacks to bring bloody carnage to the heart of Europe.

Two huge blasts, at least one of which prosecutors said was likely caused by a suicide bomber, rocked the check-in hall at Zaventem Airport, strewing the scene with blood and mangled bodies and sending hundreds of terrified travellers fleeing in terror. The fact that extremists were able to hit high-profile targets in Brussels, Europe’s symbolic capital, just months after Islamic State militants killed 130 people in Paris, will raise fresh questions about the continent’s ability to cope with terrorism.

In New Delhi, the Indian government announced there were no Indians among those killed, according to information from the Indian embassy in Belgium, but there were two Indian employees of Jet Airways among those injured.

New IT tax likely to cover more services

The committee report on taxation of e-commerce made public on Monday has highlighted a slew of online IT services that can be brought under the “equalisation levy,” a new tax that stands introduced in the Union Budget for 2016-17 on companies which advertise on online and digital platforms abroad. Equalisation levy is the tax imposed on payment made to a provider of services abroad to neutralise the disadvantage that a domestic service provider might face. The levy is to be imposed on the total payment made to the offshore service provider. For online advertising, the levy proposed in the Budget for the new financial year has been kept at 6 per cent.

In order to extend the ambit of the new tax, the budget has also kept the option open to extend this levy to other services.

If I had a few hits after Khushi, I would have quit films then itself. But I think even if I stop films, I would like to keep writing,“ said the actor.

When asked if he would like to act with his brother Chiranjeevi before hanging up his boots, he quipped “I'm ever ready to act with him.“ But he ruled out the the likelihood of forging a political alliance with his brother.“There's more chance of us coming together for a film, than on a political front.“

The BJP wishes to make it clear that it will firmly oppose any attempt to disrespect Bharat and weaken its unity and integrity,” said the political resolution adopted by the party during its two-day national executive meet in Delhi.

‘Expressionless’ actor: Nagarjuna speaks about his upcoming and future projects

The upcoming film Oopiri challenged Nagarjuna more than any of his other films. And if you have watched the French film Intouchables, you’ll know why.

Like the protagonist in Intouchables, Nagarjuna is wheelchair-bound throughout Oopiri.

“Half of our expressions come from body language, so I had to be very careful not to move my legs or hands. Moreover, the character is not a serious one, he jokes, he laughs and he enjoys life. So it wasn’t easy playing the character,” says Nagarjuna, adding that it needed a lot of patience to sit in the chair.

“I sleep around 9.30 pm, but when I was shooting for Oopiri, most of the time my body was at rest. So when I would go home I couldn’t sleep till 12.30 am. After the shot was over, I used to walk around the sets as I had sat for so long.”

Aamir Khan doesn’t hate tears

Aamir Khan, who is getting rather popular for sobbing at movie screenings, bawled like a baby at the screening of Kapoor & Sons. The actor admitted, “I cry a lot while watching films, and I cried a lot during this one too.” Here’s why we believe him.

A little over a month ago, Sonam Kapoor’s inspiring and moving film ‘Neerja made Aamir so weepy that the tears didn’t stop until he exited the cinema hall — much to the delight of the cameras.

We all know how he couldn’t sit through Katti Batti starring nephew Imran Khan and Kangana Ranaut, without an XL-sized box of tissues to sob into. Director Nikhil Advani had said, “The last 22 minutes, I literally had to sit and hold the tissue box for Aamir. He had copious tears! He was crying and I was so happy.”

Oil firms ink $1.28b pact for Russia fields

After having burnt their fingers in the Imperial deal, state-owned oil companies on Wednesday took another big stride to acquire oil and gas assets in Russia by signing agreements that could help the country reduce its oil imports.

A consortium of oil companies, including Oil India, Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petro Resources (a unit of Bharat Petroleum Corp) signed an agreement to buy 29.9 per cent stake in Russia’s Taas-Yuriakh oil field in East Siberia for about $1.28 billion (about Rs 8,700 crore). Aadhaar: Most Opp parties abstain in RS

Just 140 MPs voted on the Congress amendments to the Aadhaar Bill in the absence of regional players like Trinamool Congress, SP , BJD, BSP , JD(U) and NCP , making it a largely NDA versus Congress-Left affair.

Though most opposition parties have expressed disagreement with some aspects of the Bill, many did not turn their reservations into a vote against the proposed legislation.

Interestingly , when the Bill was taken up by Lok Sabha shortly after the Rajya Sabha vote, TMC and BJD “appealed“ to the government to accept the “wisdom“ of the elders and go along with the amendments while Congress absented itself in the Lower House.

Eye-opener in India’s opener

India crashed to a humiliating 47-run defeat in their Group 2 Super 10 opener against New Zealand at the VCA Stadium here on Tuesday.

Chasing what seemed a below-par 127 runs to win, India were done in by the Kiwis’s three-pronged spin attack. Between them, Nathan McCullum (off-spin), Mitchell Santner (left-arm orthodox) and Ish Sodhi (leg-spin) picked up nine wickets as India collapsed to 79 all out in 18.1 overs.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni stood amidst the ruins with a run-a-ball 30, as his star-studded batting lineup disintegrated in the face of the disciplined New Zealand bowling.

Earlier, electing to bat, the Kiwis excluded pacers Tim Southee and Trent Boult and went in with all three spinners.
