Tamilnadu Ready to Free Rajiv Gandhi Killers

In a development that would have far-reaching repercussions, the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday decided to release all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The convicts have spent over two decades in prison after the capital punishment awarded to them was commuted to life in jail.

The State government has sought the views of the Centre on the decision in accordance with the criminal procedure code (CrPC) since the case was probed by a central agency — in this case, CBI.

“The government of Tamil Nadu, after taking into consideration the petitions of the seven convicts, has decided to remit the sentences of life imprisonment and to release the seven persons... since all seven have already served imprisonment for 24 years,” said TN chief secretary K Gnanadesikan in his letter to Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Wednesday.
