Dipa Karmakar's High Vault-age Dream

The last few days have been quite eventful for Dipa Karmakar. From no-hoper to becoming the only Indian gymnast to represent India at the Rio Olympics, and the first-ever woman to do so, the 22-year-old from Agartala has suddenly become the cynosure of all eyes.

On her return from Rio de Janeiro at the national capital on Thursday, the gymnast had a whirlwind journey with the sports administrators, media and the fans — all wanting to speak to her. After a maddeningly busy day, when Dipa spoke to Express at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium in the evening, the tiredness was showing on her face. “I haven’t slept for 36 hours,” she said. How has life been in the last few days?

(Smiles) It has been quite good. But let me make it clear that I’m not a star. There’s nothing like that. I don’t think on those lines. My job is to keep working hard and winning laurels for the country. Yes, it is a dream come true for me, but the real journey has just started. The immediate target is to do well at Rio, and I hope to win a medal.
