Telangana, Andhra Pradesh students still have to take NEET

The decks were cleared on Tuesday for exempting state government medical colleges from the Supreme Court-mandated Neet (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for a year with President Pranab Mukherjee giving assent to the Central government’s Ordinance before starting on his China visit.

However, students from Telangana state will have to write two tests — Eamcet and Neet — to fulfil their ambition of a career in medicine. While Eamcet will form the basis for filling all seats in government colleges and 50 per cent convener quota in private medical colleges, Neet will be the qualifying exam for management quota seats in all private colleges.

And students will have to write these two exams inside two months. While Neet is slated for July 24, the fresh date of TS Eamcet is yet to be announced. Students from AP, however, have been spared the twin exam worries because they have already cleared the Eamcet hurdle and now need to write only the Neet to get admissions under management category in various private colleges.

2 metro rail stations quietly shifted

The Hyderabad Metro Rail project which is dogged by various problems is staring at yet another hitch with civil society raising concerns that the location of two stations at Jubilee Hills checkpost and Yousufguda checkpost are in violation of the original designs. The concern is that the changes will make it difficult for both the metro passengers and road users passing by these stations.

Coming up with three corridors covering 71.16 km, the ongoing metro project is designed to have 27 stations each separated by a minimum distance of one kilometre. According to the detailed project report (DPR) agreed upon by the state government and project concessionaire Larsen & Toubro, a metro station was to come up on the road median, opposite the blood bank near Jubilee Hills checkpost. Another station at Yusufguda was to come up near Mahmood apartments. However, without any explanations, these two stations are be ing constructed on different locations causing disquiet among citizen groups.

Instead of the designated location, the Jubilee Hills station is coming on Road No 36 just after the traffic signal. Construction work of the Yusufguda station is going on with the station located just before Yusufguda checkpost from the Madhuranagar side. “Locations of the stations have been arbitrarily changed. While the move is against law as it violates the DPR based on which the concessionaire agreement has been signed between the government and L&T, the new locations are in no way helpful in ensuring quality service and amenities for commuters,“ said prof C Ramachandraiah, a social scientist leading the forum Citizens For A Better Public Transport.

India's mini-shuttle blasts into Musk's race for space

India successfully launched a scale model of a reusable spacecraft on Monday, a project that in time could pit the nation against billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon in the race to make access to space cheaper and easier.

The winged vessel, one-fifth of full size, blasted off on a rocket from Sriharikota base in Andhra Pradesh, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said. The spacecraft reached an altitude of 65 km and glided back at supersonic speed for a splashdown in the Bay of Bengal. The test took about 13 minutes.

India put a probe into Mars orbit in 2014 for just $74 million, demonstrating a combination of technological capability and low costs that chimes with the goal of more frequent space travel being championed by Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Bezos’s Blue Origin LLC. Both companies seek to curb costs by making rockets reusable, and are conducting test launches more often.

Bahadur Shah Zafar-II?

With all due respects to the last Emperor of Mughal dynasty, Rahul Gandhi seems to have become Bahadur Shah Zafar-II for the Congress party, thereby helping Prime Minister Narendra Modi realise the dream of ridding India of Congress, i.e., Congress-mukht Bharat!

IS Rahul Gandhi becoming for congress

The results of the elections held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam have proved this. Barring a consolation prize of having won, along with the DMK, in Puducherry and attaining the main Opposition party status in West Bengal, the Congress has lost all. It can now talk of being in power only in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Uttarakhand; of which only Karnataka is of significance in terms of seats and population.

The Congress is now without a strong base anywhere, having been completely wiped out in Andhra Pradesh, weakened in Karnataka, defeated in Maharashtra, marginalised in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, and has drawn a near blank in most key States across the Hindi heartland. Its decimation everywhere in this round of Assembly election constitutes the most serious crisis in the party’s long history, worse even than in the late 1970s after Indira Gandhi had suspended democracy.

Bunny gives a ‘fan’tastic reply on Pawan Kalyan

It’s not easy being ‘Power Star’ Pawan Kalyan’s relative as a section of PK’s fans can be very irksome. Facing the brunt now is Allu Arjun. For no real fault of his, the superstar has been their target ever since he ignored their demand — “to comment on Power Star”. The fans took it as a big insult and are creating more trouble for him.

Being family, Allu Arjun decided to clarify his stand on Pawan Kalyan, and end the fans menace. As one of the special guests at the audio launch of his cousin Niharika’s debut film Oka Manasu in Hyderabad, Arjun started his speech with “Power Star” and ended with “Power Star”!

The actor came prepared with his excuse. “Some fans formed a group and started shouting about ‘Power Star’ in our functions, which is alright. But you are doing the same for other stars’ functions too. A top director and a big star told me, ‘see what your fans are doing... why are they obstructing our functions!’ During big events, every artiste wants to talk about their personal feelings, but the fans keep obstructing them. Though they (the stars) like/respect Power Star very much, it’s their own function and should be allowed to speak,” says Allu Arjun. He added that the fans should respect other stars and their fans, too, otherwise the Mega family actors would lose their respect.

A CONGLESS INDIA, ALMOST

BJP could not have hoped for a better setting to celebrate the Modi government's second anniversary. The results mark the revival of its `Congress-mukt Bharat' project, while boldly underlining its own political ascendancy . The doubts raised by electoral humiliations in Delhi and Bihar have largely been allayed and the party seems better placed to face tough challenges like the UP poll next year.

Assam is not a totally new political geography for BJP . But its success in taking control of the gateway to the north-east and notching up impressive vote shares in the non-traditional territories of Kerala and Bengal point to its growing footprint and, by implication, acceptance of, or indifference to, its postures on controversial issues. By virtue of BJP-controlled or allied state governments holding 69% of India's territory while Congress has been forced to retreat to 14% (please see panel above), the Modi-Shah combine can well lay claim to running the country's only national party.

Coming near the midway point of the NDA government, the outcome on Thursday will provide it with the necessary reassurance to press ahead with its development agenda.Coming as it does in the wake of the `Bharat Mata ki Jai' and JNU controversies, it may also encourage the regime to sharpen its ideological plank, especially on cultural issues. A weakened Congress, coupled with rivalries with regional bosses, represent a happy augury for passage of stuck legislations like GST. But while BJP has staged a comeback, two fiesty ladies, Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and J Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, have silenced critics with convincing wins.Mamata's Trinamool Congress flattened the Left-Congress political experiment, winning 211 seats on her own, B A Raju against 184 in 2011 when she allied with Congress.Jayalalithaa's win was closer, but the AIADMK boss, also contesting on her own, crossed the finishing line well ahead of the DMK Congress combine.

Chinnodu has no name!

Director Srikanth Addala's forte has always been family emotions. He projects them flawlessly onscreen so that everyone in the theatre can easily relate with one of the characters in the film. Looks like, he did the same thing in Brahmotsavam too. Addala doesn’t give names for his prime characters. In Seetamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, everyone in the film calls Venkatesh and Mahesh as Peddodu and Chinnodu. Same is the case with Varun Tej’s Mukunda, where the heroine and villain characters had no names. At a promotional event, Samantha told that her character in ‘Brahmotsavam’ doesn’t have any name. But Srikanth Addala selected a different backdrop unlike his previous village backdrop films. The two leading ladies, Kajal and Samantha, will play the role of NRI girls and the film was shot in so many locations.
Bankrolled by PVP, the film also features Samantha, Praneetha and Kajal Agarwal in pivotal roles.
PVP Cinema thanks Telangana government
PVP Cinema extends its sincere appreciation to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Cinematography minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Telangana principal secretary, home, Rajiv Trivedi for granting special permission to screen an extra show of forthcoming movie Brahmotsavam.

City hub for fake electronic goods

Apart from being the information technology (IT) hub, Hyderabad is fast emerging as a centre for counterfeit products, especially electronic goods! According to conservative estimates, 3035% products in the city market are imitations of original products of major brands.

A week ago, during a raid by the Hyderabad police at Chenoy Trade Centre, Parklane, HP ink cartridges were seized from a shop and officials found it difficult to differentiate between the original and the fake product as even the packing was same. Similarly , one can get memory chips, laptop batteries of Intel, Dell and Sony . Also, during the recent raids on shops at the Jagadish Market, Samsung phones were seized and they were found to be counterfeits.

However, there has been no check on these illegal pro ducts, which has now extended to even fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and automobile sector too. “As a result, unless a person purchases a product from an authorised dealer, one cannot be 100% sure whether the product is original or not. Many consumers are getting fooled due to low price at which vendors are selling the products. Hyderabad has become a hub for counterfeits,'' Gulfaraz Makani, director of Enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights (EIPR), a Mumbai-based private agency which alerts police across the country about locations where counterfeit products were being sold.

HRD Ministry to bring mobile app, portal for IIT preparations

In an effort to curb commercialisation of education and thwart the “menace of coaching industry”, Union Human Resource Development ministry is coming up with a mobile app and portal containing free lectures from IIT faculty.

HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday stated that it has also been decided that the questions in the IIT-JEE entrance test would conform to class XII syllabus.

Speaking at an event, Irani said her ministry aims to resolve the various regulatory issues faced by these bodies while expressing concern over commercialisation of education.

The Union human resource development minister said one of the biggest pressures on students preparing for IIT entrance exam is to seek outside help in preparation, referring to the “menace of the coaching industry”.

That is why the government has decided to dedicate in the forthcoming two months, an IIT-Pal portal and mobile app on which 50 years of IIT (entrance) examination papers will be available free of cost,” she said.

SBI proposes merger of 5 associate banks

The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) on Tuesday proposed merger of six banks (5 associate banks and Bhartiya Mahila Bank) with itself. The merger will create Rs 37 lakh crore banking behemoth with over 50 crore customers. The merger will also improve SBI’s ranking among the global banks and its global ranking will go up to 55 from 59 in terms of balance sheet size.

State Bank of India said that the move is to prepare itself to take competition head on with 21 niche banks (11 payment banks and 10 small finance banks) ready to launch operations this year.

This came as a surprise to investors and analysts as the bank management in the past had been vocal in opposing a merger. Besides two universal banks, Bandhan Bank and IDFC Bank have already launched operations. In an earnings press conference in the last several quarters, Arundhati Bhattacharya chairman SBI on a question of merger with associate banks had said, “The time is not correct for a merger with associate banks.”

Oversupply prompts bar on new dental colleges in India

Unemployment has entered the health sciences sector. With supply outstripping demand and no work for new dental graduates, India has decided to stop all new dental colleges.

The firm stand was taken recently at the general body meeting of the Dental Council of India which grants permission to new institutes. The decision follows requests from several existing colleges that wanted the council to reject fresh proposals for more institutes, as well as the high rate of unemployment among dentists.

India currently has 309 dental colleges, which churn out around 26,000 dentists eve ry year. The count was as high as 30,570 in 2010. In 1970, only 8,000 dental students graduated annually .

“It would be a good idea to consolidate our numbers now and strengthen the existing institutes,“ said Dr Mansing Pawar, DCI member and dean of Government Dental College. An exception could be made for states like those in the north-east that do not have any dental college, he added.

Some estimates suggest that India has 3 lakh dentists, but there is an imbalance in their spread. In 2004, India had one dentist per 10,000 people in urban areas and one dentist per 2.5 lakh people in the rural areas. It was not long ago that the good times were rolling for dentists. It is now, however, estimated that there will be a surplus of more than 1 lakh dentists in India by 2020.

No jitters for Mahesh Babu

Mahesh Babu says that he was extremely tensed before Srimanthudu released. But he is getting no jitters ahead of Brahmotsavam.

“Srimanthudu was very important for me and my career at that time, so I was tensed. But for Brahmotsavam, honestly speaking, I am more excited because of its content. I have attempted something new and I am keen to see how the audience receives it,” says Mahesh Babu.

The actor says that the film is like a celebration. “Our concept is that life is like a celebration. This film will definitely remind you of the moments you have forgotten in your life. When Srikanth Addala narrated the story to me I was blown away and decided to do it immediately,” he says, adding that the concept is all the more important in the modern context.

Mahesh Babu was approached for Brahmotsavam when Srimanthudu was under production and he locked his dates. “After I decided to do it, I never changed my mind. Srimanthudu became a huge hit but I don’t let that impact this film. I believe in content and I go accordingly.”

AP offers free edu to capital land-losers

Further wooing farmers and other landowners in the new capital region, the Andhra Pradesh government on Monday issued an order offering free education to all those affected by the land pooling scheme. The free education scheme will be in place for 10 years during which the state government will reimburse the entire tuition fee of the course being pursued by students anywhere in the country irrespective of their parental income.

Students studying in government and recognised polytechnic, professional and university colleges will be eligible under the new scheme. The candidates who secure admissions under the convener quota (category A) will also be covered under the scheme. The cutoff date for the nativity of an eligible student is December 8, 2014, the date on which the land pooling scheme was launched. While the implementation period of the scheme is 10 years, those eligible during the last year will be eligible for fee reimbursement till the completion of the course.

Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) principal secretary Ajay Jain said that as per GO 125, “The state government is obliged to provide certain benefits to the affected families, one of which is free education to all the residents of Amaravati residing as on December 8, 2014, as per rule (4), schedule III (iii) issued in the land pooling scheme rules.“

Exit Polls: Set backs for Congress in Assam and Kerala, Didi to remain in WB, close call in TN

The current round of Assembly elections that concluded on Monday has left the Congress badly bruised, if exit poll verdicts are anything to go by. While the party appears to have lost the plot in Assam and Kerala, its gambit of getting into an electoral understanding with the Left in West Bengal seems to have bombed.

The Tamil Nadu scene is hazy with the fight between the two heavyweights — the AIADMK and DMK — too close to call. So, all the Congress can be happy about at the moment is Puducherry, where exit polls have put it ahead of the ruling Rangasamy government. But Puducherry is too small a Union Territory for the Congress to treat even as a consolation prize. For the BJP, the possible win in Assam would end its dry spell on the eve of the Narendra Modi government’s second anniversary. And the political map of India could be reset close to its slogan of a “Congress-mukht Bharat”.

Allow passive euthanasia? Centre asks for your view

After years of debate and legal battles, the Centre has come up with a draft bill on passive euthanasia that gives a patient the right to “withhold or withdraw medical treatment“ and “allow nature to take its course“.

The health ministry last week uploaded the draft, titled Terminally Ill Patients (protection of patients and medical practitioners) Bill, on its website and has invited comments, via email, from people before June 19, 2016.

The bill protects patients and doctors from liability for with holding or withdrawing treatment and states that palliative care (pain management) can continue. However, the draft has disappointed experts who wanted clarity on the concept of a living will. A living will is “a document in which a person states hisher desire to have or not to have ex traordinary life-prolonging measures when recovery isn't possible from a terminal condition“.

Finally, Prince Mahesh Babu Goes Home to Burripalem

After adopting a village in Telangana but doing no such thing in his own native land, Telugu film star Mahesh Babu arrived in his ancestral village of Burripalem in Tenali mandal on Sunday to a rousing reception from the people. He promised to take up charitable work here too, mainly focused on health and education.

Braving the hot sun, people lined the streets, crowded the terraces, and clambered atop trees as Mahesh, accompanied by his father Krishna and his brother-in-law Galla Jayadev, the MP for Guntur, drove to their old house in the village. Security guards held off fans eager for a handshake with the star.

"I was last here after completing my debut movie Rajakumarudu and now I'm back to do something good," he said in a two-minute chat with the media.

The star's last big hit Sreemanthudu dealt with a rich young Samaritan who adopts his village and does good things for the people. It aimed to stir the social conscience of well-heeled people. In keeping with that sentiment, the star adopted Siddapur village in drought-hit Mahbubnagar district in Telangana. It raised questions why he wouldn't something similar in Andhra Pradesh, from where his father went on to become a major matinee idol himself.

I became a better person: Mahesh Babu

For Mahesh Babu, the music launch of his much-awaited film Brahmotsavam was a family affair. Expressing his desire to work with director Srikanth Addala for more films, he said, “Srikanth Addala is a good human being, may be because he doesn’t mingle much with people from the industry. His characters and stories are natural and related to real life. When I did Seethamma Vakitlo..., I became a good human being and now, with this film, I became a better person.”

JD(U) MLC's son kills Class 12 student for overtaking his SUV

Stung by a 19-year-old student's “audacity“ in overtaking his top-end Range Rover, JD(U) MLC Manorma Devi's son Rocky Yadav allegedly shot dead Aditya Sachdeva, who was travelling in a Swift Dzire with his friends, late on Saturday . Sources said Rocky is a member of the Rifle Club in Delhi.

While Rocky , 23, is on the run, his father and MLC's husband, Bindi Yadav -charged in 2011 with sedition for storing 6,000 rounds of assault rifle bullets -was arrested for “harbouring“ the alleged killer. The Range Rover, which costs upward of Rs 1 crore, was seized from the MLC's residence. Incidentally, a Swift Dzire comes for less than Rs 8 lakh on the road.

The killing by the JD(U) MLC is bound to further embarrass chief minister Nitish Kumar and escalate attacks against his government for sliding law and order. Scandalously , the killing took place in the presence of a cop guarding the VIP's son. Some re ports even said that the policeman fired in the air to force the Swift to stop.

“People call Nitish `Susasan Babu' but his own legislators and their family members are taking law in their hands. The killing of the Gaya youth is not the only instance,“ said Hindustani Awam Morcha spokesman Danish Rizwan. In January, JD(U) MLA Sarfaraz Alam was charged with molesting a woman on board Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express for which he was suspended from the party and an FIR filed against him. Then, RJD MLA from Nawada, Rajballabh Yadav, was accused of raping a minor girl in February and is now in jail.He too was suspended from RJD. Also, JD(U) legislator Narendra Kumar Neeraj along with his bodyguard was booked for beating up a driver in Banka last month.

Supergiants restrict Daredevils

Bowling with a lot of discipline, specially in the middle overs, Rising Pune Supergiants managed to restrict in-form Delhi Daredevils to a gettable 162 for seven in their Indian Premier League match here on Thursday.

After being invited to bat, the host batsmen found starts but could not turn those into big scores. Skipper JP Duminy, who led the side in place of Zaheer Khan, was the top-scorer for the side with his 34-run knock, which came off 32 balls with just one shot to the fence. '

Sanju Samson (20), Karun Nair (32) and Sam Billings (24) were all guilty of throwing away their wickets after getting starts. The Supergiants stifled the Daredevils innings with excellent bowling from Rajat Bhatia (2/22) and R Ashwin (0/34) in the middle overs and had it not been for some powerful hits by Carlos Barthwaite (20 off 8), the Daredevils would have struggled to find momentum. Pawan Negi contributed unbeaten 19 off 12, getting 13 runs of last over bowled by paceman Ashoke Dinda (1/34).

80 deaths in just 3 months in `suicide village' Badi

With a vacant expression on his face and bloodshot eyes, Rajendra Sisodiya, the newly appointed sarpanch of Badi village in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh, sits in front of his house in a blazing May afternoon, wondering how he will discharge his new responsibilities.

Sisodiya was made sarpanch two months ago after his cousin Jeevan, the elected village head, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in front of his house. His mother and brother too had killed themselves.

In a bizarre combination of financial distress, superstition and clinical depression, Khargone, officially one of the country's 250 most backward districts, has reported 381 suicides in the last one year.

Of these unnatural deaths, Badi village in the district, with a population of around 2,500, has reported more than 350 suicides in the last two decades. “In the first three months of this year, 80 Badi villagers have killed themselves,“ said Khargone SP Amit Singh. Every household in the village of Badi has had a suicide. “There are 320 families in our village and at least one person from each has killed himself or herself,“ said Sisodiya.

I AM NAIVE. I TRUST TOO SOON. YES, I'VE BEEN HAVING TOO MANY ALARMING INCIDENTS-BUT I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE

What image or thought comes to your mind at the idea of standing along with Amitabh Bachchan to get the National Award, with both of you being multiple-occasion winners now?

I can't say how a reader or a viewer sees it, but for me it's a bit like Alice In Wonderland. Many emotions are flying around in my mind at the moment. On April 28th, I completed ten years in films. To stand with the Mahanayak of Hindi cinema to accept an award like this -for me, it is extremely gratifying.I, however, don't know how a viewer reacts to seeing a relatively younger girl like me standing next to someone of the stature of Mr Bachchan occupying the same space.

I'll tell you what my perspective is on seeing the two of you together in one frame. I see the eternal Angry Young Man of Hindi cinema and the Angriest Young Woman of Hindi cinema sharing a common space.

(Laughs) Oh... well... umm... I think anything that brings me into the same space as Mr Bachchan, I would not deny it, I would take it, would love to be ultimate angry woman!

Wouldn't a documentary on your life very probably be titled Kangana Ranaut Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai?

Hyderabad Metro delayed again; discussions in progress, says L&T

All three phases of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project will be completed only by December 2018 and not July 2017, which was the original deadline, stated outgoing managing director V.B. Gadgil on Wednesday.

The project, which has been under his leadership since the last six years, is in a crucial stage as the Metro Rail authorities still have to cross a few hurdles in terms of land acquisition, which is proving to be the biggest challenge.
There are 44 properties under litigation in the first two phases.

Mr Gadgil said, “This is a linear project, hence all segments have to be completed for it to become operational. Even if 80 per cent of the project is completed and 20 per cent is remaining due to some hurdles, the Metro can’t operate. Hence completion is possible only after all aspects are in place.”

L&T Metro Rail has discussed the delay with the Telangana state government. L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan, said, “We have conveyed to the government about the delay and are in discussions with them.

Raj Tharun dropped from three projects

Raj Tharun, who has delivered three successful films since his debut with Uyyala Jumpala, has been dropped from three projects for various reasons.

The primary reason, say sources is his over-involvement in his projects, which is not going down well with the makers. According to a source, popular producer Dil Raju, who had announced a while back that he would be doing Sathamanam Bhavathi with Raj Tharun, has now dropped the idea. “The producer is now going with Sharwanand,” says a source.

Also, producer Madhura Sridhar, who had announced Raj as the lead actor for Fashion Designer with senior Vamsi as the director, has dropped him from the project. “Yes, I am now searching for another young hero,” says Sridhar, without divulging any other details.

A source, meanwhile, reveals that the actor wanted a few changes in the story, which the producer and director didn’t agree to. After the recent success of Edo Rakam Aado Rakam, the same producer had started another film with Raj Tharun with debutant director Nani, but after a few days that project too was shelved.

Rohith Vemula's last letter gets a voice in this play

These poignant ‘last words’ from UoH scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide note, when read out aloud in a quiet apartment in BHEL, has quite a chilling effect. Giving voice to Rohith’s letter that rocked the world of India’s university politics in January, is the play The Last Letter, that aims to dramatise the events that lead up to Rohith’s death.

Even as they take a break from the rehearsal to speak to Hyderabad Times, Riyaz Usman and his crew look quite nervous. “Many might think the play is another protest, but we have no such intention. We are just making a statement,” says Riyaz, director of the play. “It definitely has political elements because of the inclusion of official letters, but we are only reading out facts. We all have different perspectives regarding the issue. We have contrasting ideologies and opinions, and I think that’s what makes us put forth a neutral point,” he adds.

The Last Letter will be a rendition of Rohith’s suicide note. “Rohith’s letter will be interspersed with the political and bureaucratic interactions, poetry about the incident, and even the letter that Carl Sagan’s wife, Ann Druyan wrote, reacting to Rohith’s mention of her husband in his last letter,” explains Riyaz, who knows some of Rohith’s friends personally. The crew, also comprising Utkarsh Dixit, Syed Shah Nawaz Ali and Vishal Mitra, have one wish though — to stage the play in University of Hyderabad. “We are aware that any cultural activity that is associated with this issue hasn’t been allowed in the University. We also know that it won’t be easy to get permission to stage it at UoH. But we are definitely trying. We are also in talks with some of the students about the possibility,” says Riyaz...

Using rightful share of TS in irrigation water - No force can stop!

Laying foundation stone for the much-awaited Kaleshwaram project at Medigadda in Karimnagar district on Monday, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said the irrigation projects would be completed on time, despite hurdles like earthquakes, thunderbolts or cry by Opposition parties. The Rs 84,000-crore project would be done within three years. The projects would augment drinking water supply to Hyderabad, while 10 per cent of the water would be allocated for the industrial use.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the State would make use of 1300 tmc ft of waters as per GOs issued before bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh. Kaleshwaram would be a boon for North Telangana districts and 2.50 lakh acres in Adilabad district would be irrigated by drawing water to Pranahitha from Tummidihatti and building Chanaka-Korata barrages.

In a reply to Andhra Pradesh government and Opposition parties of two Telugu States for coming in the way of the projects, KCR lashed out at the Congress for adopting multiple standards and making “mindless” comments. He said no force on the earth could stop the Telangana Government from using its rightful share of irrigation waters by completing the projects to make the State a green belt.

Declaring that Kaleshwaram will be turned into a tourist spot and sanctioning Rs 25 crore for temple development, KCR said the Maharashtra government had agreed to the project and he would talk to his counterpart Devendra Fadnavis to sign the deal to speed up the works.

Most AP schemes sport `Chandranna' monicker

Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a `Chandranna mania' of sorts. In what appears to be an attempt to project himself as a `messiah of the state,' chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is naming most government schemes programmes after himself.

Seasoned politicians and analysts aver that no serving chief minister has resorted to this kind of exercise be fore. More than a dozen schemes have Chandranna tag now -the latest being `Chandranna Bheema' (insurance scheme for workers) unveiled on Sunday . This, in fact, goes against the TDP regime's tradition of naming all the government schemes after party's founder N T Rama Rao. With Chandranna tag carrying much we ight, only two schemes -NTR Aarogya Seva and NTR Bharosa -remain in the honour of the late CM.

Naidu even outdid his Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalithaa, who dubs all welfare measures as ` Amma' schemes.“Naidu cannot call himself as Anna' either as the term is ` popularly referred to NTR. People used to revere NTR as ` Anna' and certainly not Naidu,“ pointed out a political observer.

ARC biz set to buzz with more action

Now that the regulatory hurdles are out of the way, foreign funds are actively looking at the Indian stressed assets market. Many special situation funds and debt-oriented FPIs are exploring investment opportunities in the bad loan market by initiating talks with asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) in the country. Experts feel the pass-through status provided to the investment vehicles in the last Union budget enables foreign funds operating from treaty countries to invest in the bad loan market.

Birendra Kumar, MD and CEO, International Asset Reconstruction Company (IARC), told Financial Chronicle, “Though there is foreign interest in the sector, we will get clear visibility only after the Sarfaesi Act is amended and the Fema guidelines are issued.”
