WIN MANTRA: BE PATIENT, PRECISE - TIMES IN WEST INDIES

While Anil Kumble was a formidable limited-overs bowler, his legend was built on his gigantic feats in Test cricket. That his first assignment as India coach is a Tests-only tour is, thus, a happy coincidence for the visitors.

And as he and captain Virat Kohli plan and plot a triumphant sojourn in the Caribbean, the visitors do seem to have an edge over West Indies. The first of the four Tests begins here at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday .

As a bowler, Kumble was patient and precise. These are the qualities which teams need the most to succeed in Test cricket, more so on the slow pitches of the Caribbean. By all accounts, and as batting coach Sanjay Bangar asserted, the preparation for the tour has been extensive and precise, as one would ex pect from Kumble.

There was a pre-tour camp in Bengaluru where possible match situations were simulated to help the players augment their responses. The two warm-up games in St Kitts let the team to loosen up and have a feel of the conditions they are likely to encounter.
