Nayeem may have killed 7 persons

Gangster Nayeemuddin reportedly killed seven persons, including some of his own relatives, and ran an office like set up to settle land disputes. He even had a host of advisors.

After learning that in Nayeem's circles, `missing' meant already eliminated, Special Investigation Team (SIT) officials initially thought only two persons were missing. However, in the last few days of investigation, police came to know that seven persons were believed to have been killed by the gangster. Nayeem also took photographs of some of his victims while killing them.

With the SIT digging out de tails of the gangster's two decades of murky life, police discovered that like governments and business tycoons, Nayeem too had ad visors, mostly officials from departments like revenue, stamps and registrations and police, besides advocates.

Sources in the Telangana police told TOI that all these officials used to share information about important land deals and land disputes especially in Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar districts and gave inputs on how to carry out manipulations in government records. Nayeem used to reward them handsomely, either in the form of monthly salaries, land or cash, and the amount would depend on the value of information they shared. These aspects came to light after police started decoding Nayeem's detailed and meticulous documentations.

Mamool Raj continues..

Victor Rao:

Despite the State Government sanction of between Rs 25,000 and Rs.75, 000 to every police station including Counter Intelligence, Special Branch and Special Operations Team for maintenance of the police stations and enhancement of salaries of policemen by 43 per cent, corrupt practices are still thriving in different police wings.

Despite State Government’s initiatives on allowances

The recent suicide of Kukunoorpally sub-inspector B Ramakrishna Reddy not only exposed the rampant corruption in the police department but also put on display that the concept of hiking police station maintenance amount failed to create any impact on ‘mamool raj.’ After the sub-inspector’s suicide, several lower-level officials discussed the harassment meted out to them by higher officials. There were also allegations that senior officials assign monthly targets to CIs and SIs.

Battle of Sindhustan

Whose Sindhu is she anyway? The tale of one-upmanship between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana continued on Tuesday with Chandrababu Naidu declaring Pusarla Venkata Sindhu as “Andhra Pradesh's muddu bidda (beloved daughter)“ and granting 15 acres of land to her mentor Pullela Gopichand in Amaravati to set up a world class badminton academy . “We shall make Amaravati the ultimate destination for sports in India and bring the Olympics here,“ thundered Naidu at the civic reception the AP government hosted for the ace shuttler and her coach at IGMC stadium in Vijayawada.

Naidu made the event memorable by playing badminton for a few minutes with Sindhu on stage at the IGMC Stadium. Claiming that Sindhu was AP's `aanimutyam' (jewel in AP's crown) he urged the shuttler to help deve lop a sporting culture in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu said she was an inspiration to girls and women in the country after her Rio show. Gopichand's academy in Hyderabad stands on 5 acre of land which too was a largesse from Naidu when he was chief minister of united AP.

Soon after Sindhu won the silver, Naidu quickly hurrying out of cabinet meeting on August 20, announced a Rs 3 crore cash reward for her along with a 1,000 square yard residential plot in AP's upcoming capital Amaravati. He also offered her Group I officer's post of special grade deputy collector in the AP government. On Tuesday an appointment order was kept re ady for her, but Sindhu declined the offer. Telangana government biggies who had tweeted that a Rs 1 crore cash reward would be given to Sindhu upped the offer to Rs 5 crore soon after Naidu declared his intent to give Rs 3 crore.

Several steps have already been initiated, which were expected to be in place during the coming weeks. Recent steps taken by a Prime Minister-appointed Task Force on promotion of payments through cards and digital means have already prompted government departments to bear the transaction cost, common ly known as merchant discount rate (MDR). As part of the plan, Air India has decided to scrap the transaction cost on tickets booked through its websites using cards. Others such as state-run telecom company BSNL have also followed.

In the months ahead, the National Highways Authority of India will offer some a cash back facility for those using a Tag that will help them drive through toll plazas smoothly and help reduce congestion.

A likely 67th spot finish with two medals, just above Mongolia, Burundi and Grenada, here on Saturday morning was wasn't something India had expected before the contingent left for Rio.

In London, four years ago, India was 56th with six medals. One of those London medal winners was freestyle wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. The 33-year-old, better known as Yogi, was the last man standing for India here.

Yogi's 65kg freestyle contest turned out be an anti-climax. He went in there, but did nothing. It was obvious that he was injured. There were stories before his departure of a dodgy knee, a dicey back and a sore shoulder. All of it seemed to be true.

His rival, Mandakhnaran Ganzorig of Mongolia, did not have to stretch much. He took a point in the first period and two more in the second. That was it. Yogi was almost passive, going through the motions. All the experience of years of fighting tough battles, against the best in the world, meant nothing. The last man standing barely stood there and then checked out. Later, the Mongolian lost in the quarterfinals and with that ended the slim hopes a repechage, the second chance.

Hyderabad techie’s app aims at emergencies during Haj

A major problem that pilgrims from India and the sub-continent face during the Haj is the lack of knowledge of the Arabic language. This creates immense communication problems at Mina, where about 1 lakh fire-proof tents exist, and at the Mount Arafat about 20 km away.

To assist these pilgrims, a Hyderabad engineer working at Mecca has developed a free mobile application, ‘Huji app’ after a year-long research at Mecca, Mina and Arafat. It is available only on Android now.

Mr Sheik Abdullah from Santoshnagar in the city, a quality control engineer, said he started working on the app after watching the plight of pilgrims when a crane crashed at Mecca last year killing 110 persons, and a stampede which claimed 700 lives.“People from all over the world were worried about their loved ones and began calling up. The mobile network was jammed for about 72 hours after each incident. The pilgrims without knowledge of Arabic suffered as they searched for their group in the confusion. I decided to develop the application which can assist non-Arabic pilgrims,” he said.

GST could initially strain fiscal math

The Centre could feel fiscal pressure from the implementation of goods and services tax (GST) in the initial years, as it is required to compensate manufacturing states for the loss of CST, even though there is little hope of corresponding increase in its own revenue, say experts.

The Centre has agreed to fully compensate manufacturing states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for 1 per cent loss of central sales tax proceeds for the first five years after the implementation of GST.

However, finance ministry officials reveal that the government is yet to undertake the exercise to assess the impact of the planned switchover to the new indirect tax regime on the Center’s fiscal position. This is because an agreement is yet to be reached on the standard GST rate, which will be applicable to three-fourths of products and services.

Modi with KCR Attack me, not Dalits

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sent a strong message calling for the protection of Dalits and punishment for fake cow vigilantes, issues over which his party, the BJP, has been facing opposition fire. During his maiden visit to Telangana, he asked people to stop politics over Dalits, asking people to protect Dalits and other exploited sections. "If you have a problem, if you feel like attacking someone, attack me, not my Dalit brothers.

If you want to shoot anyone, shoot me, not my Dalit brothers," he declared in Hyderabad. Earlier, at Medak, he made some scathing comments about "fake cow protectors" saying they were "dividing the nation and should be isolated and punished". "Be wary of 'nakli' (fake) gau rakshaks, they have nothing to do with cow. Governments should crack down on them," PM Modi said at a function to lay water pipes in Medak's Gajwel.

This was the second time in two days the Prime Minister has called cow vigilantes to order. Yesterday, he delivered a blistering condemnation of cow protectors, saying they make him "so angry". Cow vigilantes have been blamed for some of the most outrageous incidents over the recent months, including the stripping and flogging of four Dalit men in Gujarat's Una. The incidents have provoked opposition allegations that the ruling BJP is encouraging, or ignoring, the atrocities on the underprivileged.

Health minister J P Nadda and senior officials have held two rounds of discussions with these gurus and are now working out a detailed campaign on organ donation, which is expected to be launched very soon, a senior official said.

Several studies and surveys, including those conducted by TOI, have shown that people believe in myths like donating organs may impact the next birth. There is also a misconception that pledging to donate organs may deprive a person of the best treatment for saving hisher life. Surveys showed that around 30% of people in urban areas believed organ donors would not receive any lifesaving treatment while around 20% thought their body would be mutilated.

CHASE TON HELPS WI DRAW 2ND TEST - Losing more than 100 overs was crucial, feels coach Kumble

Indian bowlers put up a disappointing show as rookie batsman Roston Chase conjured up a heroic maiden Test century leading a remarkable West Indies fightback with the hosts enforcing a draw against India on the final day of the second match, here on Wednesday.

Starting the day at a precarious 48 for four, with 256 runs needed to avoid innings defeat, West Indies ended with 388 for six with Chase, coming up with a resolute 137 off 269 balls and in the process raised three match-saving partnerships with his teammates.

It turned out to be a poor day for Indian bowlers who conceded 340 runs and could only get two wickets in the entire day’s play.

Vijaya vs Vijaya: It's `milk war'

Andhra Pradesh is selling unprocessed milk in Hyderabad as the newly-formed Telangana Dairy Development Federation (TDDF) is not giving AP access to the processing unit in Lalapet here.

The unit has been taken over by the Telangana authorities though the AP Dairy Development Corporation (APDDC) is yet to be bifurcated.

“We are unable to get our milk processed at Lalapet factory. As a result, we are forced to sell milk without processing it,“ AP advocate general Dammalapati Srinivas told the Hyderabad High Court. The ongoing tussle over the distribution of assets of APDDC, the producer of Vijaya brand milk, is threatening to blow up into a full-scale milk war between both states.

When petitions of AP and its employees questioning Telangana's `unilateral bifurcation' of the corporation came up for hearing in the high court on Thursday, it emerged that the two entities __ APDDC and TDDF_ are selling milk in Hyderabad with the same brand name `Vijaya'came to the fore.

India's top 200 set to outdo Chinese peers

India’s top companies are likely to perform better than their Chinese counterparts by taking advantage of the increased capital spending by the Indian government through the ‘Make in India’ programme and surge in demand in the transportation sector.

Giving a major thumbs up the Indian corporate sector, global rating agency S&P said despite the country’s sagging infrastructure, India’s top 200 companies by market cap are set to outperform their Chinese peers. S&P also points out that improving capacity of power generation and robust infrastructure development can provide a boost to sectors like steel, cement, auto, and real estate. The global rating agency’s analysis comes from two of its reports titled “India’s top companies set to gain even as China’s continue to feel the pain” and “The missing piece in India’s economic growth story: robust infrastructure.”

“Our analysis of India’s top 200 companies by market capitalisation against their Chinese counterparts shows that government influence is far greater for listed companies in China than in India,” said S&P Global Ratings credit analyst Mehul Sukkawala.

`Perfect start' to Cong's renewed charge in UP

Sonia Gandhi's visit to Varanasi was always going to be high on symbolism, the Congress chief kick-starting the party's election campaign for Uttar Pradesh from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency and the revered temple town.

But by the time she cut short the visit owing to high fever on Tuesday evening, the six-hour car ride through the winding lanes of the congested city, with surging crowds and full-throated slogans, took the campaign beyond the mundane metaphors to instil confidence among dispirited partymen.

Practically irrelevant in UP's political calculus for three decades, Tuesday was what state Congress chief Raj Babbar described as a “perfect start“.

Varanasi streets, Hindu and Muslim, witnessed a spontaneous enthusiasm that could not be associated with the moribund outfit from the moment she drove behind a motorcycle rally and then garlanded the Am bedkar statue on entering the city.

The Congress mascot sensed the moment and stood on the SUV door, flanked by SPG guards, waving to people jostling on the roads, bystanders doing “namaste“ from afar, and families smiling from their balconies.

Narsingh was victim of sabotage by rival: Nada

In a dramatic turn of events, wrestler Narsingh Yadav was on Monday cleared of any wrongdoing by a National Anti-Doping Agency panel, paving his way for participa tion in the Rio Olympics. Yadav , whose samples taken on June 25 and July 5 had tested positive for a banned steroid, convinced the panel that he was a victim of “sabotage“.

“There is no fault or negli gence on his part and he is a victim of sabotage by a competitor.... The panel exonerates the athlete from charges of violating anti-doping rules,“ NADA chief Navin Agarwal announced to a huge cheer from Nar singh supporters.

“I hope this matter doesn't get suppressed...The real culprit should be brought to book,“ the wrestler told TOI. The NADA panel members are law yers, former sportspersons and medicine experts.

If the doping offence had been upheld, Narsingh was staring at a four-year ban.His blood samples were found negative but urine sample had contained methandienone, an anabolic steroid. Since the samples collected on different days contained the same banned substance and as Narsingh was not notified about his first sample testing positive before the second sample was taken, as per the WADA rules, the two positive tests were considered as one infringement.

Ind vs WI: India make solid start

Opener K.L. Rahul made utmost use of the opportunity he had got as he remained unbeaten at (87*) with a solid looking No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara (20*) giving him company in the first hour of second day’s play here on Sunday.

India were 148/1 in 50 overs. Despite having the upper hand, India opted to be cautious in the 13 overs bowled in the first hour. Infact, Pujara scored his first run at the stroke of the first hour. The Windies pacers led by skipper Jason Holder were steady and were willing to be patient as they kept bowling at the fourth stump corridor.

Earlier on day one, India’s bowlers and batsmen dominated the show as West Indies’ decision to bat badly backfired. West Indies wer dismissed by tea at Sabina Park for 196 in their first innings, and India finished the day on 126/1 - only 70 runs behind.

Bad roads killed over 10k people in 2015; 3,416 deaths due to potholes

Last year, 10,727 people were killed in crashes caused by potholes, speed breakers and roads that were under repair or being constructed. Although the overall fatalities under these categories had come down marginally from 2014, the number of people killed due to potholes rose to 3,416, from 3,039 in the previous year.

Deaths caused by potholes saw a seven-fold rise in Maharashtra in 2015, according to the surface transport ministry's road accidents report. A rise in such fatalities indicates failure of road-owning agencies to maintain stretches.

Uttar Pradesh, known for its bad roads, reported an almost 50% reduction in pot hole deaths as compared with 2014. In Delhi, where a man died after his motorbike got stuck in a pothole on Saturday, showed only two pothole deaths in 2015.
