`Perfect start' to Cong's renewed charge in UP

Sonia Gandhi's visit to Varanasi was always going to be high on symbolism, the Congress chief kick-starting the party's election campaign for Uttar Pradesh from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency and the revered temple town.

But by the time she cut short the visit owing to high fever on Tuesday evening, the six-hour car ride through the winding lanes of the congested city, with surging crowds and full-throated slogans, took the campaign beyond the mundane metaphors to instil confidence among dispirited partymen.

Practically irrelevant in UP's political calculus for three decades, Tuesday was what state Congress chief Raj Babbar described as a “perfect start“.

Varanasi streets, Hindu and Muslim, witnessed a spontaneous enthusiasm that could not be associated with the moribund outfit from the moment she drove behind a motorcycle rally and then garlanded the Am bedkar statue on entering the city.

The Congress mascot sensed the moment and stood on the SUV door, flanked by SPG guards, waving to people jostling on the roads, bystanders doing “namaste“ from afar, and families smiling from their balconies.
